It’s become surprisingly fashionable for social networks and Web services to tout their support for two-step verification and other kinds of upgraded authentication. My big question: Will we get a better experience when security vendors have to attract and support users firsthand instead of going through corporate IT departments?

After trying a handful of cloud storage systems—Apple’s iCloud, Dropbox, Google Drive, Microsoft’s SkyDrive—and seeing how tightly they integrate with such new and upcoming operating systems as Mountain Lion and Windows 8, I realized I wasn’t sure which one to go with. To focus my thoughts, I wrote this post for the Consumer Electronics Association outlining the factors that ought to go into that decision.

The headline’s a little harsher than the one I first wrote for this post, but I can’t say it’s an unfair description. Between the continued lack of offline editing in Google Docs and the disappointing OCR performance with uploaded images, Google Drive… say, where’s the usual “beta” label?
